Sunday 5th Feb we were in Ricky’s bar with girls, Madé, Ketut, and Iluh, at the time they were doing a fundraiser with our Sponsor Charity Southern Cross Bali Association Inc. when they got a phone call from the girls younger brother Nyomen in Tianyar Barat, asking them to help a three month old Baby with Typhus, and a twelve year old girl in the village, who’s mother was told she would in all likelihood be dead within six weeks, she had gone to a Doctor with a rash the Doctor had given her tablets she then turned a bright shade of yellow and body blew up like a balloon she was peeing blood.
Her parents took her back to the Doctor to ask why his tablets had made the Girl Wayan turn yellow and why the whole of her body had swollen up.
He told them it was not his tablets that had made her go like that, some one must have put a curse on her, he then took the rest of tablets off them so we don’t know exactly what they were, and told them the child Wayan would have to go into hospital.
So the girl was taken to the nearest hospital, by the Madé’s brother, there they said they could not help her and referred her back to her doctor.
The next morning we went up to the Hospital in Karangasem found out what needed sorting re 3 month old was just paperwork so the Indonesian Government paid for Hospital treatment for him as promised from the money they have gained by the rise in fuel prices.
We then continued up to the village Tianya Barat collected up 12 year old Wayan her mother and young brother and brought them all to the house.
Here you need to understand that conditions in the village are harsh there is no running water all water has to be carried usually on the heads of women and children 3 or 4 kilometers up a steep mountain, but even before that they had to draw the water from a well 70 meters deep, so water is not going to be used for washing very often.
As soon as children get the to the house they are treated with nit lotion on their hair as are their parents, next Madé has to supervise them getting washed that’s the children and parents, because of Wayan’s condition Madé had to bath her three times a day.
Wayan had severe Liver bladder and Kidney problems she was peeing blood the whole of her body had blown up like a balloon she had a very high temperature.
We contacted a Nurse on the computer as she and a Doctor friend of hers help by giving advice at least twice a day telling us what Children need to be referred to Hospital what children need to see a Doctor, what drugs to purchase and calculating the doses, so the job gets done.
By a regime of bicarbonate of soda, Augmentin an antibiotic, diuretics, and liquid paracetamol the girl Wayan was made well again.
After a week Wayan’s mother returned to the village as Wayan said she would be happy to stay and be looked after by Madé, as her other brothers and sisters needed mothers attention.
When we took Wayan back to the village 25th February we had a German friend name Armen with us, it was amazing the road up to the Holy mans place is a few kilometers long, very steep with tracks leading into it, as they went up the road children came from every where running on to the road jumping up and down cheering.
Half the village seemed to be waiting for us all the kids followed us and were so happy to get their little friend back even the girls School teacher came to thank us.
Then for the next month the village held Ceremonies in thanks for getting Wayan back alive as they all expected her to die. |
